Before and after: Open patio turned into an enclosed entertainment room. The old patio roof came off down to the timbers and went back as a braced, insulated structure. Inside: a pitched painted ceiling, large-format floor tiles, a timber-clad feature wall, a built-in braai and a run of charcoal aluminium folding doors so the whole side opens onto the lawn.

Open patio turned into an enclosed entertainment room

The old patio roof came off down to the timbers and went back as a braced, insulated structure. Inside: a pitched painted ceiling, large-format floor tiles, a timber-clad feature wall, a built-in braai and a run of charcoal aluminium folding doors so the whole side opens onto the lawn.

Before and after: Timber bay window replaced in charcoal aluminium. A rotting varnished timber bay with diamond burglar bars taken out and rebuilt as a slim charcoal aluminium unit with clear safety glazing. The brick sill and surrounding plaster were made good and painted as part of the same job.

Taken back to brick and rebuilt: blue-grey wood-look plank tiles across the floor and walls, a freestanding oval bath with a brushed brass floor-mounted mixer and hand shower, a curved glass shower enclosure over a pebble floor, and a cast vanity with a vessel basin.

Before and after: New outbuilding, from excavation to painted shell. Trenches dug and foundations cast in a working back yard, then brickwork up to a face-brick plinth, a boxed roof edge, a charcoal aluminium window, smooth plaster and paint, and new rainwater goods. The rubble left with us.

Evacuated tube solar geyser installation

A stainless high-pressure solar geyser and a twenty-tube evacuated collector mounted on a north-facing tile roof, with the pressure and vacuum breakers fitted and the copper feed flashed into the roof so the installation does not become the next leak.
